Walking Figure

Visitors to The Hampton Business District at Gabreski are greeted by a sculpture that is whimsical, bold, imaginative, and on its way to becoming the East End's newest iconic piece of public artwork.

Titled "Walking Figure," the 30-foot-high aluminum outdoor sculpture stands atop the roundabout on Collins Way. Rechler Equity Partners commissioned "Walking Figure" from famed American artist Donald Baechler and installed it as part of the organization's long tradition of celebrating and promoting the arts.

According to Baechler, the sculpture embodies the concept of forward motion. "It is always going into the future," he explains. "I think the whole idea of an airport is exactly about that, going from one place to another. It's about mobility and progress. This was such a unique opportunity to produce artwork of this scale."

Baechler's work has been displayed in public places, museums, and galleries throughout the world. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1956, he was on hand for several days to personally supervise the installation of "Walking Figure."

Mitchell Rechler, who serves as managing partner at Rechler Equity Partners with his cousin, Gregg Rechler, observed, "We are honored and excited that 'Walking Figure' stands at the entrance to The Hampton Business District where people will be able to drive up and enjoy it for years to come."
